Victoria comfortable landing spot for Prince Harry and Meghan
A royal expert says Prince Harry and Meghan wouldn't be the first couple to visit Victoria and end up wanting to make British Columbia's capital city their home. The city's mild winters by Canadian standards, British heritage and laid-back Vancouver Island lifestyle could be attractions for the couple. Earlier in the week the Queen approved a plan for the Duke and Duchess to step back from their royal duties and for them to spend time in both Canada and the United Kingdom. The Queen also stated that there will be a transition period to sort things out on the couple's future roles as members of the Royal Family. B.C. Premier John Horgan says he had a discussion with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the topic and says they were both "giddy" about the prospect. Horgan added that they did not discuss the potential costs or security arrangements required for the potential move. David Spence, president of Vancouver Island's Royal Commonwealth Society, said Harry and Meghan's plans should be greeted as the start of a new generation for the monarchy. Spence said their plans are also a fresh opportunity to fulfil their roles as youth ambassadors for the Commonwealth. Paul Nursey, Destination Greater Victoria's chief executive officer, said the possibility of Harry and Meghan moving to Victoria has generated global media attention for the area. However, the city doesn't want to bill itself as a royal-watching hot spot.
