Queen Elizabeth II, the country's longest-reigning monarch and a rock of stability across much of a turbulent century, celebrated 70 years on the throne with a Platinum Jubilee in June, and died on 8 September 2022 at the age of 96. She was succeeded by her son, King Charles III. (Dec. 1)
